By now, you've probably heard at least a little bit about I'm Not There, the new Bob Dylan biopic directed by Todd Haynes. It's something of a departure from your typical biographical film. The trailer proffers that it is inspired by "true, false, authentic, exaggerated, real and imagined" stories. "That's all well and good but how's the soundtrack?" you ask. We were just getting to that, in fact. Our dear friends from Calexico show up all over the "performed by" credits. They appear on five different songs and rotate their collaborations with Iron & Wine, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Charlotte Gainsbourg, Roger McGuinn and Willie Nelson. Bravo, gentlemen.
Our research shows that there are to be seven different characters representing different stages of Bob Dylan's life--Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger and Ben Whishaw...but that's only six. My vote is on Joey Burns as the seventh cast member. But I suppose I should stick to the facts. The film is set for release on November 21 and the soundtrack is available through Sony on October 30. Go check it out at your local movie theatre and be sure to listen for tumbleweed and pedal steel in the background.
